Keep Wyandotte Unique!

3.Keep our community unique: Where we shop, where we eat and have fun -- all of it makes our community home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of this place. People generally seek out destinations that offer them a sense of being someplace, not just anyplace.” ~ Richard Moe, President, National Historic Preservation Trust

Why Buy Locally Owned?

There are many well-documented benefits to our communities and to each of us to choosing local, independently owned businesses. We realize it is not always possible to buy what you need locally and so merely ask you to Think Local FIRST!
Top Ten reasons to Think Local - Buy Local - Be Local
1.Buy Local -- Support yourself: Several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than a nationally owned businesses, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms -- continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community

Think Local First!

By thinking local, we can make choices that have dramatic impact on our local community, on Wyandotte, Downriver, Michigan.....our own economy and environment. We know and understand that we may not necessarily be able to buy everything we need or use from local independent businesses, but are suggesting that we all think local FIRST.
A Local First campaign educates consumers about the economic and social advantages that independent and local businesses bring to a community. The goal is to create a thriving local economy by maximizing the potential of local businesses, and transferring market share (business, government, and consumer purchases) from non-locally owned businesses to local independently owned businesses.
One of the greatest things an individual can do to support his or her local community is to patronize its locally owned businesses. Compared to their national competitors, local independent businesses recycle more money back into the local economy and give greater support to a community's nonprofit and civic needs. They are better positioned to respond to the special needs of the community, and they are more tied to the community's future. Additionally, a community with vibrant independent businesses retains its unique character as a great place to live and visit. In promoting a Local First campaign, a community supports a thriving local economy and its way of life.
So, let's get on board! Eat at Joe's rather than McDonalds. Enjoy dinner and watching your favorite sporting event at Lion's Tigers and Beers rather than Buffalo Wild Wings. Shop at Chelsea and Willow Tree rather than Mens Wearhouse and the Mall!

Because Community Matters

Helping Communities & Local Independent Businesses Thrive!
Supporting local businesses builds a stronger, more self-reliant local economy. We can all be part of the solution!
Think of your favorite shop (Willow Tree and Chelsea come to mind, of course), restaurant (Angelina's Mexican Restaurant, Michaelangelos Italian Bistro, Solero Cafe, Nanna's Kitchen, Lion's Tigers and Beers, Coastal Thai, Stroh's, Joes Hamburgers) or service provider (Dr. Anne Abrahamson/Great Lakes Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation).
It's probably a "homegrown business". Independent locally-owned businesses are essential to a vital local economy and community character. They're where the locals go. They're owned by our friends and neighbors, or maybe even by you (or me)!
Community-serving businesses are the backbone of local economies, civic life, local charities, and financial stability for millions of citizens, as well as a training ground for future generations of entrepreneurs.
Problem: Today, independent businesses face unprecedented competition from larger chain competitors, internet merchants and franchises that enjoy national or international branding power and major economies of scale. As a result, community-based businesses comprise a smaller portion of our economy than ever before. We’ll lose much more than places to shop, dine or do business if we allow current trends to continue.
Let's get educated. Let's continue the "MOVEMENT" in Wyandotte! We have everything you need! Clothing and Accessories, Furniture, Food, Drinks, Gifts, Coffee, Wine. Come let us show you a great HOMETOWN HOLIDAY!

What is the 3/50 Project Anyhow?

By educating consumers about the impact of their spending habits, the Project's goal is to increase consumer spending in a way that delivers the greatest amount of financial benefit to local community economies.
The message
The Project's tag line, "Saving the Brick and Mortars Our Nation is Built On" refers to its sole purpose—retention of locally owned, independent businesses, whose dollars provide a large portion of annual revenue critical to funding public resources and services.
Consumers are asked to think of three businesses they would miss if they disappeared (like Dolce Vita, Zara's, Cheesecake Magic, The Victorian Tea Room) then return to them, with a reminder that those transactions are what keeps the doors open.
The number 50 ties to the fact that if just half (50%)of the employed U.S. population dedicated $50 of their current monthly spending to locally owned independent businesses (instead of the national chains), more than $42.6 billion of revenue would be generated annually.
The 3/50 Project message then explains that for every $100 spent in local, independent brick and mortar businesses, more than $68 returns to the local economy; when spent in a big box or chain, the amount drops to only $43.
If you spend it online, and unless you live in exactly the same community as the e-tailer, NOTHING comes home.
Knowing that patronizing Michaelangelos on Elm rathern than Olive Garden helps my own neighborhood makes me feel good.
Getting coffee from TONGUE'S or THE GRIND vs. Starbucks is good for our community!
Getting that holiday outfit for your children from CECILIA MELODY vs. Gymboree makes our main street more healthy!
Getting your clothing and accessories from WILLOW TREE vs. Chicos fuels the economy (and insures you'll look fabulous).
Shopping local at CHELSEA vs. Mens Warehouse keeps our Downtown vital. It's a no brainer!
Shopping at FINE THINGS or IT ALL MAKES SCENTS vs. Hallmark or Pottery Barn keeps your money where your house is!
It's EASY! JOIN THE MOVEMENT, won't you?

There is MORE to Universal Unique Trollbeads Than You Can Imagine!

This is the fruit of a project set up by Lise Aagaard Copenhagen (Trollbeads) to teach exiled Tibetan refugees in Dharamsala to provide for themselves.
This great story is yet another example of how special Trollbeads really are! Making the Universal Unique beads for Trollbeads makes it possible for many Tibetan refugees to provide for themselves and their families.
It started in 2005 when Lise Aagaard Copenhagen began a ‘Self Sustainable Business Project’ in cooperation with a Tibet Charity. The idea for the project was to teach destitute Tibetan refugees ‘to catch fish’ as opposed to ‘give them fish’.
In May 2005, Lise traveled to Dharamsala and taught them how to make glass beads. She then bought all the beads they produced and continued to work with them in perfecting their technique for over 6 years. She also provided education on how to run their own businesses.
The result of this project are the absolutely gorgeous UNIVERSAL UNIQUE beads from Trollbeads. These beads are high-quality, glass beads that fit on ALL bracelets including Pandora and Chamilia.
Lise explained that she always experienced so much pleasure working in her trade and thought that sharing her knowledge and passion in a way that could help others was a fantastic opportunity.
The manager of the project was appointed by his holiness the Dalai Lama and started with Lise visiting Dharamsala in May 2005 when she taught bead making to 12 women and men.
'Tibet Beads’, as the project is called, continues to make beads and ship them to Denmark, where Lise Aagaard uses them in her Universal Unique collection. The style of the “Tibet Beads” reflects the Tibetans own preferences for color and design, making them individually unique.
Today, more than 24 families make a living producing this jewelery. On the main street in Dharamsala, the Tibetans have even opened their own store from which they sell their jewelery. They have also opened a dairy, a carpentry and a tailoring business as a result of the training they received from the program!
Way to go Trollbeads!

What is Acetate, Anyhow?

Acetate is derived from cellulose and has specific characteristics:
* Luxurious feel and appearance
* Wide range of colors and lusters
* Excellent drapability and softness
* Relatively fast drying
* Shrink, moth and mildew resistant
Special dyes have been developed for acetate since it does not accept dyes ordinarily used for cotton and rayon. Many blouses, dresses and made from acetate as are wedding attire, home furnishings, draperies and upholstery.
HOW TO CARE FOR ACETATE CLOTHING
Most acetate garments should be dry-cleaned, but if handwashing is allowed by the manufacturer, use the following guide:
* Handwash in warm water with mild suds
* Do not twist or wring out garment
* Do not soak colored items
* Press while damp on wrong side (inside out) with cool iron. For finishing on the right side, use a pressing cloth
(Again, we recommend that you refer to garment's sewn-in care label for specific instructions.)
Note: Acetate is adversely affected by acetone and other organic solvents, such as nail polish remover and perfumes containing these solvents.

Dry Cleaning Recommended Here

Acetate: Dry clean only.
Linen: Dry cleaning is recommended because it retains the original crisp finish to the fabric. But, hand washing in mild soap with no chlorine bleach and drying flat on a clean non-colored towel is also o.k. Note: Hand washing does soften the feel of the linen which is sometimes preferred.
Rayon: Dry cleaning is recommended, although hand washing in lukewarm water is okay. No chlorine bleach allowed. Lay items flat on a clean non-colored towel to dry.
Silk: Dry cleaning is preferred. Hand washing is possible if mild soap and lukewarm water is used.
Suede: Recommendation is dry cleaning. Although Machine wash gentile cycle is allowed.
Wool & Suiting: Recommendation is for dry cleaning. Can be spot cleaned with a damp sponge. Hand washing is NOT recommended here.

How to Wash "Dry Clean" Clothes at Home

The success will depend on the type of fabric, how the garment is put together, the dyes used, and the printing process used on the fabric.
Also your hand laundering success is dependent on the amount of dirt and stains on the fabric.
For best results always use cold water and a gentle cleanser. Hand wash by dipping the fabric in and out of the sudsy water. Gently scrub with your finger tips areas of heavy soil like the armpits and the neckline.
* Never use bleaches, regular laundry cleansers, fabric softeners, or rinse additives.
After you have hand washed your dry clean garments, roll them tightly in an absorbent towel. Unroll the towel and move the garment to a dry part of the towel and roll again. Continue until garment no longer feels drippy. It may take 2-5 rollings.
Never wring or twist your dry clean only garment - even when they are in the towel.
If the garment is stretchy like a sweater you will want to re-shape and lay flat to dry. If it is made of silk, wool or other natural animal fibers you should keep it out of direct sun light.
Give your dry clean garments a gentle shake - this separates the front from the back for faster drying time as well as removing any wrinkles caused by the rolling process.
Tops and dresses should be hung. Be sure to straighten the collars into position you want them to dry in.
Clothing items that are NOT safe to hand wash and are best taken to the dry cleaners:
*Acetate fibers
*Rayon (It often shrinks – though it generally only does so once.)
*Garments with a special finish on them
*Leather or Suede.
If the garment is very special to you - and you would be sad if washing by hand changed the garment in anyway, don't chance it!

Machine Gentle Cycle vs. Handwashing & Machine Dry vs. Hang to Dry

Typically, these fabrics easily stretch, snag and lose their shape when machine washed.
Another factor to consider is the type of washing machine you are using. Many top loading machines with the central agitator are too rough for these gentle fabrics and should be avoided. There are some front loading machines that are much gentler on clothing in general and offer a higher level of success.
There is some trial and error in attempting to machine wash “hand wash” items. If the item is valuable or irreplaceable, don’t risk it. If it is a general, everyday item that can be replaced if necessary, then try the steps below to gently wash it in the machine.
Machine Washable Fabrics/Fibers
■Acrylic
■Cotton
■Lycra
■Microfibers
■Nylon
■Polyester
■Polyolefin
■Spandex
■Triacetate (unless it’s pleated)
If Machine Washing “Hand Wash” Items You Will Need:
■Mild laundry detergent
■Mesh lingerie bag(s)
Steps to Machine Wash the Clothing:
1.Smaller loads are best when washing these delicate pieces.
2.Select a cold temperature wash and add the appropriate amount of mild detergent.
3.Place the item in a mesh lingerie bag to help prevent snags and stretching while it is washing.
4.Complete the cycle and promptly remove the clothing.
Machine Drying “Hang to Dry” Items
1.Similar to washing, the appropriate settings are of utmost importance when drying items that are not designed to be placed in the dryer.
2.Most “hang to dry” items are labeled as such because the heat of the dryer will cause the fabric to shrink.
3.If machine drying, use a “no heat” setting.
4.Remove the item from the lingerie bag and place it in the dryer.
5.Stop the drying cycle while the piece is still slightly damp.
6.Remove it and hang it dry until it is completely dry.
Additional Tips and Advice
■If you have any doubts as to how the piece will tolerate the machines, play it safe and hand wash it.
■It may also help to take baby steps to see how the clothing tolerates the cleaning steps. For example, try machine washing the piece and allowing it to air dry. Then, the next time you clean it, try drying it for a short amount of time.
■Good luck! If the clothing comes out well, you’ve found an easy, efficient way to clean them!

John Medeiros, Rhodium, Cubic Zirconium & 14K Gold

He uses man-made Cubic Zirconium which will not chip, crack, cloud or fade. Cubic Zirconium is virtually indistinguishable to the eye by diamond experts, can scratch glass like natural diamonds, and is tougher than a sapphire.
Rhodium is a chemical element that is a rare, silvery-white derivative of platinum. It is one of the rarest precious metals, and the most costly. It is resistant to tarnish and improves optical impression.
Rhodium IS a precious metal. In fact, it's about ten times costlier than gold, but generally not used to make solid jewelry because it's difficult to work with. It is fabulous as a plating for jewelry because it is glittering, dazzling, white and mirror-like. Rhodium plating makes cubic zirconia look bigger and better because it's so bright that it's hard to see where the stones end and the metal begins. Nothing sets off stones like rhodium plating does.
The hallmark of each piece of John Medeiros is that it is hand-polished and plated in rhodium and 14Kt gold which has a permanent non-tarnish, easy to care for finish.
Come in next week to experience this fabulous line for yourself!

Come Along on the "Journey of a Brighton Handbag"

Sketching a Masterpiece
Drawing from their rich imagination, Brighton designers sketch the tiniest of details of the finished piece as they envision it. These intricately detailed pencil drawings serve as the "blueprint" for the artisans who will craft the pieces.
Timeless Artistry
In creating the exquisite ornamentation that adorns each Brighton Handbag, skilled craftsmen hand-carve a three-dimensional wood model that captures all the detail and beauty of the designer's original pencil drawing. Brighton's talented wood carvers are descendants of artisans that worked on ancient temples in China. From this wood model, molds are made for production and casting. These custom pure silver-plated designs are then partnered with the finest leathers and materials - resulting in the amazing creations you see in the Brighton collection.
